Fun-O-Rama XX + The life of a teacher

Today was the day that I returned to the place where I had spent the best two years of my life.

ACJC!! =D They were having Fun-O-Rama XX, and Ms Too had asked Anna and I to help out at the Handicrafts stall manned by the teachers.

I was late (because I had underestimated the time needed to reach there =P), and by the time I got there, there wasn't much time for me to walk around the grounds to see the stalls. Haha.

However, Mas, Anna and I ran into Mr Kuna when we were looking for Ms Too to inform her of our presence before 3PM (our designated shift), and we were greatly entertained by the witty exchanges between both teachers after he stopped to talk to us. I never knew they could be so witty. Haha.

I've detailed the exchanges below for my own entertainment =P They may not accurately depict what I said because I cannot remember the exact words =P

On weight:

Me: Mr Kuna, you've slimmed down.

Mr Kuna (K): Look at Ms Too. She's very streamlined right?

(Anna, Mas and I nod)

K: We are both in this competition to be slim. I cannot lose to her, you see.

Ms Too (T): (shocked look) I didn't know of this competition.

K: It's because you didn't know that's why it's more interesting.

T: It's rather stressful to be in a competition I don't know about.

Okay Mr Kuna did say something here but I don't remember what he had said =P

On finding out that I am teaching English and Chemistry:

K (smug look): Ahh...(puts his right hand palm up and pointing to himself) and English...(does the same to Ms Too)

T: Ahh yah...(points to herself with a look of satisfaction)

(they both teach Chemistry and GP respectively)

K: I see that my Chemistry is continuing on with its life. (something like that =P) Have you told them that Chemistry is life yet?

Me: Not yet, but I will tell them that soon.

K: Ahh yes, you should tell them that Chemistry is life.

On Ms Too:

K: You know, a lot of people come looking for her and they think we have two of her. You know, TOO SL. I always have to correct them, that we only have one here. One of her is bad enough. Imagine if we have two!

(by then, the three of us were keeling over with laughter already haha =P)

Haha. I find it funny even if you don't (cuz my Mummy didn't really laugh when I told this to her). I guess their expressions and gestures probably added to the humour. Haha. I think they must be really stressed at work usually that's why they can come up with such nonsense. I personally witnessed some weird talk about sunblock just yesterday in the DY staffroom. Haha.

Which leads on to my next topic about seeing teachers as human beings. When I was a student, I never saw my teachers as having lives outside of school. I thought that all they have in life is just work and students. That was because they would be in school before I arrived, and still there when I leave.

I never appreciated the effort they took to mark my work, set work, set exam papers, stay back for CCA, come back on weekends for CCA, etc. I just saw the results/products; I never saw the processes they had to go through to come up with the products.

Which is why I don't really blame my students for thinking that teachers are very free and criticising our lessons/us without giving much thought to the effort we have to put in to come up with all these things for them. I never knew that a lesson needs so much effort until I had to come up with one myself. I never knew how difficult it can be to mark an English essay until I had to thumb through so many pieces of broken English.

And I never knew how horrible it is to chase for homework after having to go through it myself.

I mean, I have always been one to hand in what I need to, on time. So I shouldn't be getting retribution! =(

Shouldn't students themselves take the responsibility for handing in homework since they are the ones who want the education? What is the world coming to...

Okay I'm going off. I just staved off my promise to myself to keep my weekends sacred. Because there is simply not enough time. Sigh.

But I'm beginning to enjoy it. It's only when I try to relax that I will feel a bit sian. Is this weird?

gothere.sg

I just wanted to rave about gothere.sg, which is a website where you can find out how to get to various places from.

It is marvellous because of these features:
1. it can plan your journey according to the time and date you want to leave, and generate an estimation of the time that you would need.
2. it gives you a list of the amenities that are in that particular shopping centre you want to go to.
3. there are 4 transport options for you to choose from - bus, train + bus, taxi and car. And it can estimate for you how much time is needed for each option.
4. for the public transport options, it will tell you approximately how much fare you need to pay.
5. for the driving option, it tells you the parking charges of the carpark of that particular shopping centre. It even tells you what other carparks are available in that area (including URA carparks), as well as their charges.

I got this website from my pet pervert and just used it for the first time. It is so much more user-friendly and informational than streetdirectory.com!

It has a whole lot of other features that I have not explored. Go and try it sometime if you need a journey planner! ;)

I sound like I am endorsing the website. Haha.

Love and Losses

I was reading Ka Mun's blog and came across this quote by her lecturer:

"I have lost someone I love, but he lost someone who loves him. So why be sad?"

Interesting way of seeing things, but it really is true. The maxim "it is more fortunate to be loved than to love" does have a certain element of truth to it. It is so hard to love someone and not be loved in return. On the other hand, if you have been loved but suddenly lose that person, I guess you will feel some sort of emptiness in your life for some time before you can truly move on.

Unless you are some jerk.

Most of us would have lost in love from time to time, but what matters is that you have loved and lost, instead of lost without loving. If you know what I mean.

I can't write much on this because I have no cause to be emo now. Heh. I really think I write better when I'm emo-ing. HMMM.
